The department I work in pulled rank when I first interviewed - I was applying for a Sys Admin position. Lo and behold I end up a senior support technician, instead.
What about the $6,000pay-cut I'm taking to work in this position?
"...don't worry - you will likely get that back in your salary within the year once you've shown that you can perform here blah blah..."
Flash forward 2 years. I have easily proven myself, surpassed expectations, and even performed duties well outside the scope of what I was hired on to do. And it was only this February when I get a raise. Its amount barely accounts for the "standard" cost of living raises they normally offer. Mine was a little higher: "..in recognition for all that you have done.." I'm told.
Hell, the amount is exactly the combined amount of last year's raise (which they did not give due to money woes) and this year's raise! Really? I am expected to believe this is a reward or something for what should have been the standard cost-of-living adjustment.
But that is a non-issue, now.
I will be starting with a new company, in a wholly different industry, and with people that strike me as genuine and sincere. They communicate in straightfoward terms and do not attempt to sweet-talk anything. That is something I certainly respect. I pride myself on my professional integrity. And they in turn acknowledge and appreciate that.
And no, my diatribe is not one of bitterness. Only disappointment. You (I) expect those you work with to have the same caliber of character and poise as you do; it is disheartening when the opposite is proven to be the case.
I know I have said this a few times already.......
I will be missing the lunches, the random IM's/emails that we shared during our 2.5 years working together. With that said its a good thing you only live all but a few streets away.
But is has been an absolute pleasure getting to know you, and developing a solid friendship. There really aren't many people I truly trust out there. I am happy to consider you one of the few.
I know that you will be in good hands with your new venture, and hope that they will take a liking to your literary excellence and spoken prowess.
You have been an excellent source of knowledge and a great mentor. I can safely say that with your help and guidance has driven me to get my career on the right path.
I continue to look forward to all the time we will get to share on the road making our rides between cities, states, and who knows maybe a country or two.
Vernon I wish you the best of all luck possible. Sorry to see you go, but I know you will be better off.
